THE CREATION OF THE “CULT OF CHIVALRY” BY EDWARD III AS A WAY TO STRENGTHEN THE ENGLISH MONARCHY

The article deals with the process of the centralized creation and promotion of the “cult of chivalry” by Edward III (1327-1377) as a lever in achieving military and political goals. An important aspect of research is the analysis views of British historiography concerning the background, motives and process of institutionalizing the knights of the Garter. Selected controversial issues and gaps in the study of this phenomenon, the elucidation of which will allow to determine the field effects of the "cult of chivalry" at specific milestones of English life, politics, and society. The projects and ideas to promote chivalric ideals in the realm of the Plantagenets and beyond are evaluated. An important subject of the study is the explanation of the paradox of eficiency the "cult of chivalry" in the background of the decline of the feudal knights’ armies in England. The author highlighted a set of factors around king Edward III in the context of modeling claims to dominance in Europe through a revaluation of the role of the knightly class as a means of consolidating allies and eliminate enemies in the rear.
