CHEKHIVSKYI VOLODYMYR: A PORTRAIT IN THE CONTEXT OF HISTORICAL EVENTS
The article analyzes a life path and political activities of Volodymyr Chehivskyi, a well-known figure of the Ukrainian national movement, the representative of the Ukrainian Social Democratic Labour Party, a head of the government of Directory of the Ukrainian National Republic, and a renowned religious figure of Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. The research deals with the causes and a range of activities of Volodymyr Chehivskyi, who became involved in public affairs at the age of 20, fully participated in the formation and operation of the Council of General Ukrainian Organisation and combined cultural work with political activity in the Ukrainian Social Democratic Labour Party. V. Chehivskyi belonged to very few representatives of the Ukrainian intellectual elite who make a career during the revolutionary events in 1917-1921. His greatest achievement was his work as a head of the government of Directory of the Ukrainian National Republic, when he initiated and started implementing a number of urgent and essential decisions in the sphere of internal policy. In the research, his social, political and religious activity is considered, his work during 1920-ties is brought to light, and the issue of his imprisonment and further life is investigated. In general, Volodymyr Chehivskyi’s work became a sign of the lack of confidence, inexperience and shortsightedness of Ukrainian politicians of the time regarding the implementation of consistent national policy and protection of Ukrainian interests.
